The classroom I never had
Monday, March 29th, 2010
And always wanted. I can’t help but imagine the possibilities to develop my little kid’s mind and skills combining cool tech with simple tactile and social activities. I’m no expert but I would love to see a classroom with a couple of those cool Strukt tables (equipped with amazing apps) designed to interact with old-school crafty toys perhaps enhanced with RFID tags =)

Just place a toy on the surface and a cool story or puzzle will unravel…Well you get the idea =) Easier said than done but why not?
Pod Purses
Friday, March 26th, 2010These polymer clay evening bags by Kathleen Dustin are absolutely exquisite. I’d love to have one on my wrist at my brother’s wedding next weekend. I can also imagine using them as lovely little sculptures in the sunroom.
Brooklyn Bridge Park Opens
Friday, March 26th, 2010Lately I have this thing for Brooklyn – it currently tops my list of places I’d like to live. On Monday Pier 1, the 85 acre Brooklyn Bridge Park, opened and is now approximately seven percent complete. Pier 1 includes waterfront promenades, large lawns, a playground, and the “Granite Prospect,” an impressive riverside staircase made out of more than 300 pieces of salvaged granite. This video provides a good preview of the park-in-progress.

Pop-Up Encyclopedia Prehistorica – Dinosaurs!
Thursday, March 25th, 2010I’ve always had a thing for pop-up books, especially ones by masters Robert Sabuda & Matthew Reinhart. When I saw this Encyclopedia Prehistoria of Dinosaurs, I absolutely had to buy it for Henry. Never mind he would rip all their heads and legs off, it’s for his future, in like 10 years from now. This book is so amazing, with over 35 of the most gorgeous pop-ups, and neat info about the dinosaurs and the paleontologists who discovered and named them.
Each page has a fabulously large and intricate pop-up, with more dinos hiding behind each flap.
I love this scary roaring carcharodontosaurus! I’m a meat eater myself :)
When Bruno meets Steve.
Wednesday, March 24th, 2010
I forgot how much I enjoyed and admired Bruno Munari’s work ;) I wonder what would happen if his amazing children’s books got “translated” into an app for the ipad? Maybe the app comes with his awesome Pre-libri. It definitely should be reactive and intuitive…something like the amazing 555 kubik facade projection below, and also gesture based, like Munari himself no? Now I wonder if anyone would let their toddler play with a gadget like that… Perhaps with a super hardcore baby-proof skin/shell? :P
Rain, rain go away…
Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010It’s another rainy day in Toronto, so I’ve been searching for the perfect umbrella. My favorites were via Likecool.com. At top of my list is the Cloud Umbrella by Joonsoo Kim – a mini cumulus that can be inflated into a big cumulus to ward off the rain.
Though, more true to my sentiments today is the Fuck the Rain umbrella by Anton Shnaider..
The recovery room
Sunday, March 21st, 2010Hey, nice postcard ;), I’m starting to appreciate stationery a bit more, it’s quite an art form isn’t it? I should get myself a couple of cards, the guys who printed our laundry bags for ICFF have very cute handmade stuff, would love to visit their cute store in Kensington Market but I guess I have to try and find something cool here :P
And coming back to the post title and image ;) “The recovery room” is something silly I’ve been thinking about, now even more that I’m feeling a bit crappy. I think it could be interesting to play with the concept of a “recovery” room or recovery kit to put a place into actual physical healing “mode” combining things like mood lights, acoustic panels, air purifier, humidifier, aroma therapy?, sunlight/no light, subtle sound/projections, a plant wall or nice pots and a hammock or 2 :). I wonder what children’s hospitals are doing right now, hmmm dunno what do you think?
A Postcard from Julia & Paul Child
Saturday, March 20th, 2010We just finished watching Julie & Julia – a charming movie that even Nick liked – and I so loved the scene where Julia and Paul Child create their own Valentine’s Day postcard, I had to find the original one. Here it is… I totally want to bite their style :) More postcard obsessions to follow. Ok, off to bed..
Playing with Scale, and Plants
Saturday, March 20th, 2010Ohh – very lovely cup cleaner. Something about Matteo Cibic’ aesthetic and sense of humor reminds me of Science&Sons, who also play with plants and scale, whose work I totally dig, and who definitely write the very best product descriptions in the business. Take their ‘Oblique Clock’ – launched this year for Toronto’s 2010 Come Up To My Room design exhibition… Product description intro: “The OBLIQUE CLOCK is part of a new series of works that keep time like Frenchmen keep mistresses; Artfully and with great precision.” :) And it’s lovely…
